Likely named after Henry David Thoreau, the varying pronunciation of this town is usually "threw." We cruised through Thoreau when the entire town was at the high school rodeo. Thoreau is also home to the world famous Frontier Trophy Buckles, who make the beautiful prize buckles coveted by many.

Continental Divide ΓÇó The Top O' the World used to be located here. It was a dance hall, bar, tourist court, trading post, and boarding house with a somewhat seedy reputation. Atop the Continental Divide today is a group of trading posts, all advertising wholesale rates and Indian Jewelry. One of the trading posts is owed by Armand Ortega, the man who restored and currently owns the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup. At an altitude of 7,263 ft., the Continental Divide is the highest point on Route 66.
